Historical note: The First Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division was sent to Vietnam in 1965. It was the third United States Army unit to arrive. In December of 1967, the remainder of the division was deployed to Bien Hoa, South Vietnam in Operation Eagle Thrust. The 101st was the only army division ever airlifted directly into combat. William N. Gillmore was a United States (U.S.) Army officer who graduated from U.S. Military Academy in 1925 and served in artillery commands for the majority of his military career.
